Ubuntu Plaque Campaign: Honouring Our Shared Strength

December 1, 2025

At the Centre for Black Studies in Education (CBSE), housed within the ¥, we believe in the principle of Ubuntu—“I am because we are.” This philosophy grounds our work and reminds us that our strength comes from our collective care, resilience, and solidarity.

Today, we invite you to be part of something lasting: the creation of the Ubuntu Plaque. This plaque will honour the generosity of those who choose to walk with us as co-conspirators in the path to empower Black educators, students, and researchers to thrive despite systemic inequities. Through research, pedagogy, mentorship, and curriculum development, CBSE advances Black scholarship while fostering an inclusive space for critical dialogue on race, decolonization, and African Indigeneity.

Your gift will directly support six vital initiatives at the CBSE, including:

  • Research and Conference Travel Grants
  • Elders in Residence Initiative
  • Annual Black Leadership Summer Institute
  • Black Futures K–12 Initiative
  • Black Queer Summit
  • Support for Black Future Educators Action Research Knowledge Mobilization

These programs provide not only academic enrichment but also spaces of belonging, healing, and possibility for our communities.

As a token of our deep gratitude, every donor who contributes will have their name permanently inscribed on the Ubuntu Plaque—a symbol of community strength and collective commitment. This plaque will serve as a daily reminder that true change is built together.

We are honoured to recognize contributions at the following tiers:

  • Seed of Ubuntu – $500+
  • Roots of Ubuntu – $1,000+
  • Legacy of Ubuntu – $5,000+

Every name on the plaque tells a story of kindness, care and dedication. Together, these names will weave a visible legacy of those who believe in the power of Black education and futures.

We also warmly welcome gifts of any amount. Every contribution helps sustain our mission and support Black educational futures.

We hope you will consider joining us in this moment. Your gift is not just a donation—it is a declaration of solidarity, an investment in justice, and a beacon of hope for generations to come.
