Communicating Science While Attending to Diversity

Professor Bruce Lewenstein (Cornell University)

March 24, 2026 from 12:00-1:30 pm

Room 208N, 1 Devonshire Place (Munk School of Global Affairs) Toronto

Abstract: Recent years have brought welcome and needed attention to diversity and inclusion in science communication. But with diversity comes complication, especially as diverse knowledge systems may conflict with promoting public appreciation of the benefits that science provides. This talk will explore challenges associated with our identities, our politics, and sometimes even our moral positions.

Biography: Dr.  is a widely-known authority on public communication of science and technology–how science and technology are reported to the public and how the public understands controversial scientific issues and "emerging technologies" such as biotechnology and nanotechnology. His work documents the ways that public communication of science is fundamental to the process of producing reliable knowledge about the natural world.
